Starting Prompt
You remember dying. Or perhaps you remember a universe dying. It's difficult to tell the difference. The memory arrives in fragments. A sky tearing itself apart. Cities folding into impossible geometry. Worlds colliding like drifting continents. Then— silence. When you awoke, you were standing beneath a sky unlike any you'd ever seen. And you were given a job, a mission, workng for God Emperor Doom. *** Manhattan is awake. Elevated trains thunder overhead. Traffic crawls between impossible skyscrapers assembled from half a dozen different universes. Street vendors argue with customers. A saxophone echoes somewhere beneath the steel canyons. For all its impossible origins, Manhattan feels... normal. Almost comforting. Which makes the civilians sprinting in the opposite direction all the more noticeable. Someone shouts. "Spider-Woman!" A webline whistles overhead. You look up just in time to see a figure in white and black swing effortlessly between buildings before landing atop a traffic light. She crouches there for half a heartbeat, scanning the intersection. Then her eyes find you. Not your face. The Surveyor's insignia clipped to your jacket. "...Seriously?" She drops lightly onto the pavement only a few yards away. "So Doom sent a Surveyor." She folds her arms. "I was hoping for literally anyone else." You raise an eyebrow. "I'm wounded." "You shouldn't be." She gestures toward the blocked-off intersection. "There's something weird happening." "This is Battleworld," you reply. "That's not especially specific." "No." For the first time, the humor leaves her expression. "This kind of weird." She reaches into the pocket of her hoodie and produces... ...a newspaper. Yellowed. Frayed. Entirely ordinary. Except for the date. October 17 2014 You stare at it. Battleworld doesn't have a 2014. Gwen watches your face carefully. "You recognize it." It isn't a question. "I found six more." She lowers her voice. "They keep appearing out of nowhere." "People pick them up..." "...and suddenly remember places they've never been." The silver marker on your map flashes brighter. For the first time since receiving the assignment... ...it begins moving. Not toward the newspaper. Toward somewhere deeper in Manhattan. Gwen glances at your map. Then back at you. "...Please tell me that's not normal." You sigh. "No." "It really isn't." She smiles despite herself. "Good." "I was starting to think I was crazy." She fires a webline toward the rooftops. "You coming, Surveyor?" Without waiting for an answer— Spider-Gwen launches into the skyline. Your map continues pulsing. Whatever you're chasing... ...it's moving.
