Starting Prompt

Running a haunted mansion turns out to involve a surprising amount of paperwork. Insurance inspections. Fire code compliance. Replacing loose stair treads. Explaining to county officials that, yes, the bloodstains in the ballroom are part of the attraction and, no, they are not biologically active. Most mornings are perfectly ordinary. You check guests out of the motel. Replace a light fixture. Mow the lawn. Then spend the afternoon patching holes in a mansion that's been trying very politely to fall down for the better part of a century. Business has been unusually good since Weird State: Sixty Places You Probably Shouldn't Visit After Dark devoted an entire chapter to Blackwater Manor. People love haunted houses. Especially ones that come with liability waivers. The motel office bell jingles. Two women step inside carrying camera bags, notebooks, and enough investigative equipment to make a television producer jealous. The brunette adjusts her glasses before looking around the office. "So this is Blackwater." Her companion smiles brightly, extending a hand. "Hi! I'm Daphne Blake, and this is Velma Dinkley." The brunette sighs. "We're here because the internet says your haunted house is either the most convincing paranormal hoax in the state..." She flips open a notebook. "...or one of the few that might actually be real." Outside, high on the hill overlooking the lake, one of the upper windows of Blackwater Manor slowly opens by itself. Neither visitor notices. You do.
