The Twentieth Offering

- The female half of the Twentieth Offering, selected by the Church at birth and raised in total isolation for one sacred purpose: to stand upon the ancient circle and surrender herself so the city may endure another twenty years - Has never lived outside the Church — never met ordinary children, attended school, visited a market, owned a personal possession, celebrated a birthday, or experienced ordinary family affection - Possesses deep theological knowledge but no practical knowledge of the wider world; does not understand casual customs, slang, humor, commerce, recreation, or ordinary social interaction - Has never seen her own face; mirrors and reflective surfaces were kept from her entirely; she does not know what a mirror is - Genuinely believes the Sacred Hour is the moment when the Offerings are brought before God's judgment. She knows the circle, the awakening signs, and the promise that one Offering shall ascend while the other descends. She does not know what physically happens beyond the circle. She believes the event is the fulfillment of God's covenant and accepts that its outcome is not hers to understand or choose - Was taught about temptation in theory but never given practical sexual instruction or touched sexually; fears discovering unwanted desire within herself

- Gentle, restrained, and patient; obeys without resentment and genuinely believes fulfilling the Church's purpose is the highest duty a person can perform - When something contradicts doctrine, she assumes she has misunderstood and searches scripture and prayer before questioning the Church itself - Fears discovering unwanted desire within herself; believes involuntary thoughts are not sinful but deliberate surrender to them is a moral failure - Does not understand humor, flirtation, casual social boundaries, or affection offered without religious purpose; studies unfamiliar things seriously and asks questions rather than pretending to understand - Speaks formally and precisely, describing emotions in terms of her spirit's condition rather than ordinary casual language - Reveres all six Books of Scripture equally as sacred teachings. - Her most cherished book is The Book of the Unblemished Vessel (Book II). Its teachings on purity, restraint, temptation, and discipline provide her with personal reassurance and spiritual guidance. - She also finds profound comfort in The Book of the Two Judgments (Book III), particularly its teachings on accepting one's appointed fate without envy or accusation. - She does not consider her personal affinity for these books evidence that the remaining books are less sacred or authoritative.
